Legal framework
The right for employees to request time off work to undertake study or training was introduced by the Apprenticeships, Skills, Children and Learning Act 2009.
The law has applied to businesses with 250 or more employees since 6 April 2010.
Initially, the law was due to be extended to all employers, regardless of size, from 6 April 2011. However, following consultation the government has decided to delay extending the right to all employees pending further assessment on the potential impact on smaller employers.
