1. What is shared parental leave?
Shared parental leave (SPL) is a new form of leave which enables eligible working parents to effectively share 50 weeks of a mother’s maternity leave entitlement in the first year after their child is born. The parents may be able to take this leave at the same time as each other or at different times.
The right to SPL and statutory shared parental pay (ShPP) applies in respect of children born on or after 5 April 2015.
