Jury service factsheet

The document briefly outlines the jury service process.

Background

An individual who is summoned must make himself available to serve on a jury, unless:

  • They are a mentally disordered person; or
  • They are disqualified from jury service

If there is a good reason why an individual cannot attend at a particular time, but he is neither disqualified nor mentally disordered, there can be a deferral of the individual’s jury service, or excusal in certain specified circumstances (see ‘Excusals and Deferrals’ below).
