Career breaks factsheet

Introduction

There are a number of reasons why employees may want to take a break from their career, including to travel, undertake further education or to raise a family.

Implementing a career break scheme has advantages to both parties. The aim of a career break is to enable the employee to preserve a job, including accrued salary and benefits, during an extended period of absence. This acts as an incentive for the employee, when they do return to work, to take up employment with the same company who, as a result, retain key skills and experience that may otherwise be difficult to replace in a competitive labour market and maintain employee loyalty.

There is no specific legislation governing career breaks, which is why it is important for employers wishing to allow this to have a written policy setting out who will be eligible and the terms and conditions of the scheme.
