Basic criminal records checks provide details of an individuals’ convictions and conditional cautions considered to be “unspent” under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974.

Currently, checks for England, Wales and Scotland are submitted to Disclosure Scotland. However, the government has announced that from 17th January 2018, applications in England and Wales should be submitted directly to the Disclosure and Barring Service. Disclosure Scotland will continue to undertake checks for individuals in Scotland. The DBS will also be making a new online application form on its website for basic disclosure certificates in the near future.
